A Story of My Grandfather

May 13, 2008

My grandfather experienced a war which totally changed his life. In 1945, WWII came to an end after Japan surrendered unconditionally. But China was still under the fighting because the Chinese Communist and Kuomintang party were at war. It was devastated everywhere, and my grandfather’s hometown was no exception.

During the war, Chiang Kai-shek, the president of Kuomintang, was calling on the teenagers attending the army to fight against the Chinese Communist. Driven by the patriotism, my grandfather left his family and joined Kuomintang. At that time, he was only 17 years old. The war was unfavorable to Kuomintang. Finally, Kuomintang   lost, and forced to leave China. Chiang Kai-shek decided to move to Taiwan and waited for the right time to fight back. About two million people followed Chiang while others decided to stay in China. My grandfather followed Chiang and moved to Taiwan. However, he didn’t know that he couldn’t go back to China until 40 years later. “Fighting back to China” is just like the castle in the air.

In Taiwan, my grandfather remarried and settled in Taipei. When the government lifted the ban of going to China, he went back to his hometown finally. Everything has changed. His former wife has remarried; his sons have 40 years old. I witness a tragedy caused by war. And numerous similar tragedies happened to people of my grandfather’s generation. Their patriotism and loyalty lead to the falling apart of their families. This event made me understand how horrible and miserable wars are.

I want to have fun with my friends

May 2, 2008

I felt that I haven’t had fun with my friends since the college entrance exam is coming. I study all day and night to get higher scores. So do my friends. Because of this, we can’t have time to go out together and have fun. I usually recall the sight we played basketball under the blazing sun or played card in the café. All of these things make me happy. I know this tough period is going to end, and the past happiness is going to come back. At that time, we will have lots of fun. That will be cool!
